Basic Wildland Firefighter 200-hour training program

This program is enhanced S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaws, Pack Test and ICS-100, ICS 200, L-180, L-280, S-110, S-130, S-190, NIMS 700, CPR and First Aid courses, as well as teambuilding, crew cohesion, interpersonal crew dynamics, fuels reduction techniques, and leadership training.

Each day will incorporate a physical training, teambuilding, and crew organization component specifically designed to help develop a cohesive well-organized Fire Crew, both physically and mentally prepared for the tasks they will be performing on the job.

In addition to interactive classroom studies, instructional techniques include, long arduous hikes carrying tools and equipment that will regularly be used on the job. These activities will help to build stamina, work hardening, improved situational awareness and crew cohesion.

The hikes will also include teaching and discussion points along the way to reinforce course curriculum with examples in a real-world environment. Much of the curriculum includes hands on actives and exercises in the field with the focus on the duties of a Fire Crew Member.

Advanced Wildland Firefighter

Advanced Wildland Firefighter

This 160-hour training program builds on the Basic Wildland Fire Training program. Participants that successfully complete this program will be better prepared to safely operate in the wildland fire environment. This program will develop wildland firefighters to be more qualified and marketable; and exceeds the training requirements for NWCG Type 1 Wildland Firefighter.

This training program includes the following instructor led training:

  • S-131 Firefighter Type 1
  • S-211 Portable Pumps and Water Use
  • Basic Land Navigation and GPS
  • S-215 Fire Operations in the Wildland Urban Interface
  • S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior
  • Daily Physical Fitness and Team Building

Total hours – 160

Upon successful completion participants will receive 5 additional course certificates and be eligible to be issued a Firefighter Type 1 Task Book. These certificates include:

  • S-131 Firefighter Type 1
  • S-211 Portable Pumps and Water Use
  • Basic Land Navigation and GPS
  • S-215 Fire Operations in the Wildland Urban Interface

Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the Wildland Fire Academy, graduates will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain environmental factors of fuels, weather, and topography that affect the start and spread of wildland fires and how these factors can affect safety.
  2. Explain what LCES (Lookouts, Communications, Escape Routes, and Safety Zones) system is and how it relates to the Standard Firefighting Orders and firefighter safety.
  3. Establish wildland fire control measures using various methods on simulated fire ground situations while communicating clearly and effectively.
  4. Demonstrate competency and skills to design, set up, operate, troubleshoot and shut down portable water delivery systems.
  5. Explain and demonstrate basic chain saw operation, troubleshooting, maintenance and fireline construction techniques.
  6. Describe how to operate safely and effectively in a wildland urban interface incident using situation awareness, performing structure triage and citing appropriate structure protection actions.
  1. Demonstrate how to interpret a topographical map to determine slope, aspect, acreage, distance and coordinates.
  2. Identify the fundamental leadership principles, human factors and techniques used to communicate effectively.
  3. Explain and demonstrate understanding of the components, principles and concepts of the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  4. Explain the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System (ICS) and the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  5. Describe the ICS functional areas and the roles of the Incident Commander and Command Staff. Describe the General Staff roles within ICS. Identify how NIMS management characteristics apply to ICS for a variety of roles and discipline areas.
  6. Describe different types of briefings and meetings. Explain flexibility within the standard ICS organizational structure. Explain transfer of command briefings and procedures. Use ICS to manage an incident or event.

We provide courses in accordance with NWCG requirements and NFPA Standard 1051 for Wildland Firefighting.
